The Barrie Film Festival ran for the last 10 days.
It had a solid line up and a bunch of neat speakers (like Jesse Wente from the CBC) but we were only able to attend the closing film: Robot & Frank. It is a great little movie that has quite a few "Sherry logic flaws" but even I wasn't really bothered because it was so endearing.
The old (and trying to be new again) little downtown theatre actually had a line in the lobby. A LINE! I haven't seen more than 10 people in that place in over a decade. I seems the film festival is a good for business.
Hopefully the announcement of a new North End Cineplex doesn't dampen their spirits, or their cash flow, although I imagine it will. Like everything else good in Barrie it will die. Sigh. At least before it closes shop I can have a beer at the weird wood-carved old timey bar (that looks like it came out of a rich old guy's basement). They set it up right beside the concession stand.
Barrie, you're all class.
