When I was growing up, my mom always wanted to have roses. Well, more specifically she just wanted at least ONE rose plant to grow in our side garden, but alas, it seemed doomed to failure.
For this reason I'd always assumed roses were really hard to keep alive and therefore not worth the money.
When we moved into our house five years ago there were some fairly small but healthy roses growing along the back wall in VERY hard clay soil. I knew I didn't want them to stay there, but I figured if I tried transplanting it would kill them.
Thanks to my mom though, I figured my mere presence as the caretaker of these flowers would also kill them eventually, so I saw no real harm in attempting a transplant.
Miraculously, several transplants down the line, the roses are thriving. This year I'm going to have more blooms than ever before and the different varieties are all so pretty. I'm going to take a few more pictures because there are even more roses now then when I snapped these.
Foolishly last summer I bought a NEW rose plant from the farmers' market and planted it. I assumed this year I would see beautiful yellow blooms. Instead, it appears to be dead. hmmm... I guess the lesson here is that in order for women in my family to enjoy roses, we have to inherit them through property acquisition.
