I will never claim to be a wiz at geography. I learned what I was taught in school and beyond that my lack of knowledge about the world is pretty bad. I need to work on that. I think some travel is in order, since experiential learning is the best kind of learning. :)
Now, having said that, this tidbit of news from the CBC still caught my attention because I couldn't believe my ears. This is pathetic, sad, and a little hard to swallow. I know students often lack basic skills outside their area of interest these days, but the students in this story are the "good ones". The ones that made it into university. They are also (presumably) mostly Canadian. I thought is was the American's job to not know what exists beyond their country's borders.
It is becoming clear that Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader is our society's canary in the coal mine. I didn't think it was possible, but I guess it is. Jeff Foxworthy is going to save us all.
